Latest News

For 2010 we will organise 3 horse trials in Cumbria and we very much hope you will be able to support us by attending as spectator, competitor, exhibitor or volunteer. In the spring we are starting a new horse trial at Charles Lowther’s Nord Vue Estate, near Armathwaite, which will be called the Eden Valley Horse Trials and is scheduled for April 10th and 11th.

This event will fill the gap left when Brougham, near Penrith retired out of the calendar a few years ago and British Eventing were very keen to find a fixture in Cumbria early in the season.  Nord Vue enjoys sandy going and old turf and we will make use of its large outdoor arena for the show jumping and so hopefully it will prove resilient to our Cumbrian weather!

In the summer, Hutton in the Forest International, will run twice, firstly as an international event on June 18th, 19th.

British Eventing continue to assist us to develop Hutton and so we will be adding a new classes and attractions and running over three days for June to allow for some 750 competitors and 3000 spectators for what will be a very exciting event.

Hutton in the Forest 2 on 20th September 11th and 12th will run with similar classes and may also have an International class.  (Incidentally, Cumwhinton Horse Trials, near Carlisle will take place on July 17th and 18th and will return to having a Novice class sitting along side its lower level classes).

I hope you will agree that to have these horse trials in our County will bring great benefits and much needed visitors to the area.

Hutton International will once again run at 1* level and will also see a new BE80 (T) course along with a series of new cross country fences including many new combination fences.  The main arena will move further towards the cross country start area to find the best of the flat ground in the Park and ever more spectators and trade stands will attend.

Your hosts for the weekend are Lord & Lady Inglewood and the Hutton in the Forest Estate.

Nothing more, nothing less.

Exhibitors

Hutton in the Forest is located just 3 miles from Junction 41 M6 and is a renowned traditional Estate which has hosted horse trials for the past three years and became an International event in June 2008. It is anticipated to have a footfall of 3000 people over 2 days of competition and be on a weekend previously occupied by Hutton National horse trials for the past 3 years.

Fully completed applications must be received by 30th April 2010.

Eden Valley Horse Trials: 10 & 11 April 2010

Where? Nord Vue Farm, Armathwaite, Carlisle, CA4 9TN. Which is approx 7 miles from both junction 41 and 42 of the M6 motorway.

When? Saturday 10th and Sunday 11th April

Which classes will run? BE90 and BE100 will run on both days with a BE100 open section also on Sunday. There will only be five sections each day in this first year so entries need to be in well in advance to secure a place

Why? Eden Valley is a long awaited replacement for the lost Brougham and Ivesley events which last ran in 2007/2008 and will hopefully sit well as an early season run after Witton.

What’s the venue like?  The farm is actually fairly hilly but in the first year the XC will run across the lower pastures.  The going is very sandy and on old turf so it should enable the event to run even if the weather has been wet.  The dressage arenas will be on recently re-seeded flat ground and the show jumping in a large outdoor rubber/fibre mix surface arena. There is some hard standing for the very long/heavy lorries near to the SJ with the remaining lorries parking just off the hard road leading to the farm alongside the XC. It is a very compact site with good views of the XC course.

What will the XC be like? Designed and built by Douglas Weymouth, the XC will be very straight forward to provide a good first run of the season and suitable for first timers. Douglas describes it as “a true ‘amateur’ offering.” As with all of Douglas’s courses it will be built to a very high standard and beautifully presented.

There is a superb new water complex (25m x 18m) right in the middle of the course with a run in and jump out for BE100.  There will also be a jump on and off a bank, a step to log, spreads, brushes, post and rail combinations and a short run uphill and sweep back down – no drops or downhill approaches to ditches.  There are no woods to traverse just yet so it is a very open course but this will help make it a good cantering track.

What else? Plenty of trade stands. Prizes in kind for all sections and rosettes to 10th place.
Also points awarded for the Cumbrian Challege Trophy which  in 2010 will be presented at Hutton in the Forest (2). BHS trophy also awarded to the highest placed Cumbrian rider at the culmination of all four Cumbrian events.

Volunteers

Be involved, without Volunteers no horse trials can happen. Events rely on people like you and your friends and at Hutton we are exceptionally lucky to have many truly loyal volunteers.

Lord & Lady Inglewood are completely behind the event and will host a reception on Friday 21st to welcome all the volunteers, riders, owners and officials to what we hope will become the very best horse trials in the North. It will be a great occasion for everyone to meet before the competition begins in earnest.

There is a mountain to climb in terms of raising sponsorship, organising all the infrastructure and encouraging exhibitors to come to a new event, so if you know of any friends or colleagues who would also like to be involved in any way, please let us know and we will encourage them to join what is set to be something very special for Cumbria.
